What you type into the calculator

The calculator runs on your own device. The price, the nation and the toggles are worked out by JavaScript that arrived with the page, and none of it is sent anywhere. There is nowhere to send it: no server of ours ever sees it. Nothing you enter is kept between visits, and closing the tab discards it.

The one thing that reaches the address bar is the nation, which some links on the site carry as ?country=scotland. Nothing else is ever put there, and the price you type never is. Some pages are written about a set price and carry that figure in their own address; that is the page's price, not yours.

Cookies

None. The site sets no cookies of any kind, not for analytics, not for preferences and not for advertising, and it keeps nothing in your browser's storage between page loads. That is why there is no cookie banner: there is nothing to consent to.

Counting visits

Visits are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, on every page. It works without cookies: Cloudflare's own description is that it uses no client-side state for analytics, and that it does not track people over time by IP address, user agent or any other fixed attribute.

Rather than recognise a returning visitor, it counts a page view each time a page loads, and counts a visit whenever you arrive from somewhere that is not this site, a direct link included. What that produces is a set of totals: pages viewed, country, referring site, browser, operating system, device type, and how long pages took to load. The query string part of a URL is not recorded, and nobody can be picked out of the totals.

Cloudflare keeps the unsampled measurements for seven days and aggregates them down after that. It publishes no retention period for the aggregated figures. Its documentation is at developers.cloudflare.com/web-analytics.

Cloudflare as the host

The site's files are served from Cloudflare Pages, so every request for a page goes through Cloudflare's network. That is separate from the analytics and would happen whether or not the analytics ran. Cloudflare's privacy policy describes what it handles for the sites it serves: IP addresses, traffic routing data, system configuration information and other information about traffic to and from those sites. It does that to deliver the page and to protect its own network, and it acts as our processor in doing so. No server of ours sits in the path, so there are no request logs on our side.

If you email us

Writing to [email protected] means we have your address and whatever you wrote, in a mailbox. It is kept no longer than dealing with the message needs, and it is not added to any mailing list. What the site can and cannot help with is on the contact page.

Advertising

There is none. No adverts are shown on the site and no advertising or ad-measurement code is in its pages. The intention is to carry advertising eventually; if that happens, this page will be rewritten before the first advert appears, and whatever consent the law then requires will be asked for at the same time.

Links to other sites

The guides link out to gov.uk, revenue.scot and gov.wales for the official rules. Those sites set their own terms and their own cookies, and nothing about you goes with you beyond the referrer your browser sends on any link.
